Communication Rights Are Women's Rights

The Foundation for Media Alternative's statement in conjunction with International Women's Day, 2006, calls for four specific measures needed to recognize communication rights as women's rights. They include the need for full restoration of fundamental civil liberties including freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of media, the respect of civil liberties in the use of new media and communications technologies such as the internet, collaborative and creative responses by local and global communities to incidences of exploitation of women and girls over the internet, and gender sensitivity in the design, implementation and evaluation of ICT policies and initiatives at all levels of governance.
